Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami Message from Bodhinatha

Namaste and Aloha!

Last month we traveled to Maryland for the pratishtapana of the Murugan Deity at the Greater Baltimore Temple. Pratishtapana is the magical rite whereby priests awaken a stone statue as a living Deity. During the ceremonies, I had an opportunity to share with the devotees present my talk entitled "Insights into Hindu Temple Worship." Included prominently in the talk is a description of some of Gurudeva's visions of Lord Murugan. One story I think you will especially enjoy has to do with the founding of our Kadavul Hindu temple in Hawaii in 1973. A large Nataraja bronze had recently arrived from India, and Gurudeva was wondering where on the property it should be installed as the central Deity for a new temple. That night in a vision, Lord Murugan came and struck His vel three times on the front steps of the building, indicating where the Deity was to be placed as well as giving spiritual energy to that spot. We placed the Nataraja there the next day, and worship began. The front portico became a Siva temple, and since then we have used other entrances to enter the building. We are grateful to our global family of temple builders for your continued generous support. General contributions for June totalled $50,646.51.

Om Namasivaya,
Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami

Bodhinatha attends Baltimore Sthapana Mahotsav
On June 22nd Bodhinatha attended a special seven-hour ceremony at the Hindu Temple of Greater Baltimore. Along with Swami Dheerananda of the DC Chinmaya Mission, four hard working priests and 250 devotees, he participated in the installation ceremony of the Murugan Deity in a side shrine in the temple. After the ceremony, an attentive crowd listened to his talk, entitled "Insights into Hindu Temple Worship." The chief priest at the ceremony, Ganesha Gurukkal of the Siva Vishnu Temple in Washington, DC, was delighted to see Bodhinatha again. The last time they saw each other was several years ago at the Rose Hill Temple in Mauritius, where Gurukkal was serving at the time. Bodhinatha remarked that Hinduism is certainly developing a global priesthood!

Iraivan Temple progress
Another month and another giant step forward for Iraivan Temple: the fourth and final 6-foot by 11-foot monolithic jalakam (stone lattice "window") was hoisted into place. The jalakam was handled with special caution, as it could easily crack since it had been mined from a different quarry and contained an unusually fragile mixture of crystal and granite. To stress this, we even received an urgent call from Chidambaram Sthapati at the worksite in Bangalore to caution about this masterpiece that took three man-years to create: "Be really careful with this stone!" Everyone held their breath as it was lifted gently into place. Then the last beam of the temple was set in place above it. Four days later, ten sunshade stones were placed on the eastern roof edge of the temple.

Woodlands Temple representatives visit from Texas
Nitesh and Yogita Bankar visited this month from the north Houston area. They are trustees of a new temple project in Woodlands and wanted Bodhinatha's guidance as they move forward with construction plans. Bodhinatha gifted a Ganesha murti to this temple project in November of 2005. The bhumi puja was held on May 11, 2007. Bodhinatha will visit this temple group on August 14.

Wish-fulfilling temple
Gurudeva said that Iraivan Temple will be a wish-fulfilling temple. That prediction seems to be coming true. We have heard from many devotees saying that their written prayers have been answered. One couple named their new baby boy Shiv in honor of the temple's fulfillment of their wish for a child.

Our monastery videos
Bodhinatha has asked the monks to produce a video summarizing the content of the latest issue of Hinduism Today, to be posted on YouTube every quarter--all part of an effort to introduce more people to Gurudeva's teachings, the greatness of Hinduism and the profound teachings of Saiva Siddhanta. The monks are having fun learning to use movie software. A short film exploring the ancient art of drilling a hole through a granite block by hand has been created. You can view these videos, as well as a video edition of this newsletter, on our YouTube channels: www.youtube.com/hinduismtodayvideos www.youtube.com/kauaiaadheenam

Have you ever been put on the spot with a provocative question about Hinduism, even one that really shouldn't be so hard to answer, such as, "What is karma?" If so, you are not alone. It takes some good preparation and a little attitude adjustment to confidently field queries on your faith--be they from friendly co-workers, students, passersby, and especially from Christian evangelists. And now you have a resource to turn to, "Ten Questions People Ask About Hinduism ...and Ten Terrific Answers!"

"Ten Questions" originated back in 1990 when a group of teens from the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, Lemont, sent a request to Hinduism Today for "official answers" to nine questions they were commonly asked by their peers. These questions had perplexed the Hindu youth; and their parents had no convincing answers. Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami took up the challenge and provided answers to the nine questions. When republishing the answers for Hinduism Today in 2004, the editors added a tenth question on caste, since that is the most relentless criticism Hinduism faces today.

The ten questions are: Why does Hinduism have so many Gods? Do Hindus believe in reincarnation? What is karma? Why do Hindus worship the cow? Are Hindus idol worshipers? Are Hindus forbidden to eat meat? Do Hindus have a Bible? Why do many Hindus wear a dot near the middle of their forehead? Are the Gods of Hinduism really married? What about caste and untouchability? No doubt you've been asked one or even all of these questions during your life!

Each question is addressed by a short response that can be committed to memory, a longer answer, and a detailed explanation. Gurudeva gives advice on how to deal with questioners, in particular to avoid being defensive when faced with what is often just a honest inquiry. There is no need to assume, he advises, that the questioner is trying to attack Hinduism. He also points out that you don't have to know everything. "I don't know, but I can find out" may be your best reply.

Misconceptions about Hinduism are a common, global phenomenon, even among Hindus, and students, teachers, neighbors, friends and even you will all benefit from these thoughtful answers. You can download or purchase the booklet online at www.himalayanacademy.com/basics/tenq/.

It is also available in Telugu (and soon in Tamil and French) at www.himalayanacademy.com/resources/languages.html. This 16-page, full-color pamphlet includes a section on the yamas and niyamas, twenty keys for spiritual living in contemporary times. Also available are eight other booklets on Hindu basics including "Visiting a Hindu Temple," "Four Denominations of Hinduism," "Nine Qualities to Cultivate in Children" and "Hindu History."

Gurudeva's Wisdom

To understand the mysteries of the soul, we distinguish between the soul body and its essence. As a soul body, we are individual and unique, different from all others, a self-effulgent being of light which evolves and matures through an evolutionary process. This soul body is of the nature of God Siva, but is different from Siva in that it is less resplendent than the Primal Soul and still evolving, while God is unevolutionary perfection. We may liken the soul body to an acorn, which contains the mighty oak tree but is a small seed yet to develop. The soul body matures through experience, evolving through many lives into the splendor of God Siva, ultimately realizing Siva totally in nirvikalpa samadhi. Even after Self Realization is attained, the soul body continues to evolve in this and other worlds until it merges with the Primal Soul, as a drop of water merges with its source, the ocean. Yea, this is the destiny of all souls without exception. Aum Namasivaya.

A Health Care Directive Saves Family Grief

Sanjit Sharma had slipped into a coma from which, his doctors said, he would not awaken. His grieving family, however, had one great consolation: Sanjit had put down in writing what he wanted done in just this circumstance.

Rather than debating if and when to take their father/grandfather off life support--remember the Terri Schiavo case contentiously argued in the US Congress?--they referred his doctor to Sanjit's advance health care directive.

"I already have that in my files," the doctor told them. "Sanjit gave us a copy when he was in the hospital five years ago." The family breathed a communal sigh of relief. They still had many issues to face, but Sanjit had lifted from their shoulders this delicate decision. Besides saving them from conflict at a time of great stress, he also saved his estate from the enormous expense of high-tech but, in his case, futile medical treatment.

The advance health care directive, also known as a durable power of attorney for health care, is a legal document, similar to a living will, that lets your physician, family and friends know your health care preferences, regarding the types of special treatment you want or don't want at the end of life, your desire for diagnostic testing, surgical procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and organ donation.

The Hindu belief in the rebirth and reincarnation of souls transforms death from a calamity to a natural process, a means by which the soul sheds one body and continues its evolution in another. But our technical ability to keep patients alive and the natural inclination to prolong the life of a loved one can create conflict among family members who are keeping vigil by the bedside.

By completing an advance health care directive, you, like Sanjit, can avoid having your family making crucial medical decisions for you at a time of emotional turmoil, and assure that your wishes are fulfilled.

Most US states have a form you can fill out to express your health care wishes. If you have Internet access, google "Hawaii Advance Health Care Directive" or "California Advance Health Care Directive (California Probate Code Sample Form)." Ideally, have an estate planning attorney guide you to make sure your wishes conform to both state and federal law. Your health care directive will allow you to make clear:

Keep your original signed form and give copies to the person you appoint as your agent and any alternates, your physician, family members, and the health care institution providing your care. Don't rely on this brief article for authoritative guidance. Again, an estate planning attorney is your best resource.

Pilgrimage to Iraivan

Iraivan is a punya tirtha, a sacred destination for devout pilgrims. The vision of Lord Siva on San Marga that Gurudeva was blessed with in 1975 is sustained and made manifest by the daily sadhanas of 21 resident monastics from five nations. Kadavul Hindu Temple and the many sacred areas of San Marga are available to Hindus for worship, meditation, japa and quiet reflection. It is recommended to arrive on Kauai so your pilgrimage begins most auspiciously with the weekly 6am Siva homa in Kadavul Temple. Daily pujas in Kadavul July also be attended: 7:30am for Lord Murugan, 9am and 12 noon for Lord Siva, and 3pm for Lord Ganesha. There is also a daily 8am outdoor Siva puja at the Svayambhu Sivalingam on San Marga. Pilgrims can conduct their own abhishekam at the Narmada Sivalingam. The swamis will provide classes, including instruction in specific sadhanas to perform during your pilgrimage. All pilgrimages need to be prearranged and are limited to twelve days once a year, unless you are enrolled in the supervised Master Course Correspondence Study. Enrolled students are welcome to come on prearranged pilgrimage as often as possible throughout the year.
